Due to be released on October 30, 2008, Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex is just over a week away from final release.

One of the most hotly awaited Linux distros around, I took a round on their beta testing site to see the newest features:

  1. A new Gnome update with plenty of fixes and tab support for Nautilus
  2. Upgrade to the newest Linux kernel, which was a major upgrade
  3. X.Org 7.4, which is sweet for those not on fglrx.
  4. A guest session mode
  5. An encrypted private directory by default
  6. A network manager with enhanced capabilities.
  7. A new Samba

There are other upgrades and updates besides, but these are probably the most radical.

Just how radical are they, in real use? I am waiting for the release version to see…
